Fall 2008

Greetings EYSA Family and Friends,

“Champion....not a place but a journey”

“We could change the world tomorrow if all the millions of people around the world acted the way they believe.”  Jane Goodall

We all believe that the children of our community deserve the best soccer program available.  Unfortunately, that belief is as far as it goes for many.  Elizabethtown Youth Soccer Association is reaching a critical state!  Many individuals have committed talents and money over the years, not to mention the many volunteered hours to grow EYSA into the well respected organization that it is today.  Those individual’s children have grown to adulthood and their batons of service passed on to the next leg....we find many of those batons not being passed on to another runner, not finishing the race of EYSA’s full potential.  We all dream of a soccer program that can provide for the many levels of play that are needed.  Recreational, Select, TOPSoccer and Adult soccer all provide the opportunity of play to meet each level of ability.

“Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents, which in prosperous circumstances would have lain dormant.”  Horace

The years with prosperous numbers of committed volunteers have passed.  We have a whole new generation of parents that need to “step up” to keep programs such as EYSA in existence.  The mere fact that many won’t even spend one hour in the concession stand is proof that the foundation of this organization has reached critical status.

“The first great gift we can bestow on others is a good example.”  Thomas Morell

What examples have been bestowed on you?  Many of you are children of EYSA, yourselves.  What if those committed volunteers had left everything for someone else to do?  Would you have had the positive experience that you now want for your own children?

“Hold yourself responsible for a higher standard than anyone else expects of you.  Never excuse yourself.”  Henry Ward Beecher

Do your talents empower you to be:  a cheerleader, a team parent, a team manager, an assistant coach, a head coach, an age group commissioner, a parent representative, vice president over a specific group, the volunteer coordinator for the concession stand or field marking, willing to do the concession stand purchasing, willing to oversee and organize the maintenance and improvement of the fields, equipment and facility, willing to organize the publicity needed to notify the public of registration/try out dates or “Players of the Game”, willing to oversee and organize uniform orders, willing to be responsible for registration, willing to be responsible for scheduling games and orchestrating rescheduled games with the fields person and referee assignor, willing to take responsibility for the handling of the funds and expenditures for a large non-profit organization or willing to take responsibility of the entire Association and its operations, relations with City and County officials, as well as, relations with the State and National Soccer Associations?  EYSA has grown to over 1200 kids per season year because individuals were willing to take on these tasks.  It is now your turn!  These are all avenues of service that are necessary for EYSA to function at its best, over and above showing up for practices and games.

“Leadership is practiced not so much in words as in attitude...and in actions.”  Harold S. Geneen

Are you always quick to make suggestions as to how EYSA can be better organized, function more seamlessly, offer more programs...............are you ready to be part of that action?  We will be having our Annual General Membership meeting in the spring when our annual elections take place.  We have several key positions that have been vacant for some time as well as some key positions that have tenured Board members that would like to pass their batons to the next generation.  I, myself, will be completing my second term as your President.  Our By-Laws do not stipulate a certain number of successive terms but it would be best for the organization to have a rotation of fresh “legs”.

“Rank does not confer privilege or give power.  It imposes responsibility.”  Peter Drucker

It is all of our responsibility to make certain that EYSA continues.  Just because you may not hold a Board position makes you no less responsible for the integrity of this organization.  We are all responsible for the words that we allow to pass from our lips and we are all responsible for the actions that we choose to take in emotional or elevated circumstances.  Our children learn from our examples in handling confrontation and disagreements or excitement and success.  These are the life lessons that accompany the teamwork, self-discipline and effort learned on the pitch.

I know this has been a lengthy but necessary letter but hey, you had several months without a letter!  Thank you for your patience to read it and I hope that it encourages you to find your talent and role within EYSA!  I have enjoyed and benefited from my association with EYSA for the last 12 years!

I will leave you with this last quote:

“The hallmark of a well-managed organization is not the absence of problems, but whether or not problems are effectively resolved.”  Steve Ventura

 Your humble President,
